Understanding Discernment in Spirit Communication

How you begin to recognize who you’re connecting with

Explore, Learn, and Discover

As you begin communicating with spirit, a question naturally arises:
“How do I know where this message is coming from?”
It’s not usually the first question. It tends to show up after you’ve had a few experiences… when things start to feel real.
And the answer lives in a word you’ve probably heard before: Discernment.

What Is Discernment?

Discernment is simply noticing where a message is coming from… and whether it aligns with your higher self.

I can hear you already…
“I know the word… but how do I actually do that?”

Before we go further, just a reminder:
I’m sharing from my own experience. There are many paths, and each one unfolds in its own way. Take what resonates… and gently leave the rest.

Where It Begins

Discernment doesn’t start with analyzing the message. It starts with how you feel as you receive it.

We’ve already touched on the importance of being rested and feeling good before a session. That isn’t random. It matters.

When you feel clear, grounded, and open, you’re naturally aligned with loving, supportive communication.
When you’re depleted or stretched too far, things can shift.
Not dramatically. Just enough to notice.

The Part Most People Overlook

You already know how to do this.
Most of us were just trained out of trusting it. We learned to prioritize what others say over what we feel.
To second-guess that quiet inner knowing.
But that feeling? That “I knew I should have…” moment?
That’s discernment. It’s always been there.

What to Pay Attention To

When a message comes through, notice:
Does it feel open and expansive… or does it feel tight and constrictive?
You don’t need to overthink it. Just notice.

There’s a reason I share this with you.
Not because I read it somewhere… but because I lived it.

There was a time when I didn’t understand discernment in this way.
And the experience I had shaped how I approach this work now.

Looking back, I can see there was purpose in it, especially in where I find myself today, sharing this with you.

A Personal Story on Discernment

When my clairaudience first opened, I had no idea what it was. I just knew I was hearing my guides… and I was fascinated. I was learning so much, so quickly, that I didn’t want to stop.
So I didn’t.

For about a week, I was doing this for at least 8 hours a day. At the time, it felt exciting. Looking back, I can see I was completely exhausted.
And that matters more than I realized.

One evening, after I had already been pushing myself all day, the energy of the communication shifted. The messages started to feel urgent. I was being told that I needed to do some kind of clearing work for my husband… or something terrible was going to happen to him.

Now, I know how that sounds. But in that moment, I didn’t question it the way I would now. Because I was tired. And when you’re that tired, your clarity isn’t the same.

My husband, being the patient soul that he is, sat with me for about two hours while I tried to “fix” something that, in hindsight, didn’t need fixing at all.

Eventually, he gently said he needed to get some sleep for work the next day. So we stopped… and went to bed. And of course… nothing happened.
Everything was completely fine.

I, however, wanted to crawl under a rock from embarrassment. But that experience taught me something I couldn’t have learned any other way: When your energy is depleted, your discernment isn’t as clear.

At the time, there was very little information about this. No one was really talking about what happens when you’re just opening up… or how important it is to be rested and grounded. That’s why I share this with you.
Not to make it heavy, but so your experience can be lighter.
Maybe this is why I went through it the way I did…

What I Took From It

Start gently. Short sessions are more than enough.
Even now, I rarely go beyond an hour without taking a break.
Not because I can’t… but because I’ve learned what feels aligned and sustainable. Holding a clear, steady connection takes energy. And when you respect that, everything flows much more easily.
Don’t worry, the divine will be there when you come back.

How Do You Know The Difference?

Messages aligned with the divine tend to feel: calm, supportive, loving, kind, and grounded in a quiet kind of knowing.

There’s no pressure. No urgency. No need to prove anything.
Now… here’s where it gets important. Not everything that sounds positive is aligned.

If a message places you on a pedestal, like “you’re here to save everyone,” or “you’re a reincarnated deity,”
…that’s not something coming from the divine.

And if a message feels critical, diminishing, or sharp, that’s not aligned with divine guidance either.

Your divine guidance adores you.
And it doesn’t flatter and inflate you into something you’re not.
It meets you in truth.

A Simple Way to Understand It

When I say “the Divine,” I’m referring to:
your higher self, your spirit guides, your angels, and Source.
That energy is consistent. It’s not confusing and it’s not chaotic.

You’re Not Powerless In This

This part matters more than most people realize:
You are in charge of your sessions. Your intention leads. If something feels off, you don’t have to figure it out. You don’t have to analyze it.
You can simply say: “This is not aligned with me. You need to leave.” And end the session. That alone resets everything.
From my experience, if that happens, I take it as a sign to stop or take a break, usually meaning I’ve gone a little too long or I’m not as grounded as I was when I started.

Support Is Always Available

Whether or not you have ever worked with angels you can invite assistance.
For example, you can call on Archangel Michael and ask that anything not aligned with love be cleared.
Angels are non-denominational. They are here to help all humanity. They are happy to assist at any time, but you have to ask.

Is It Really This Simple?

Yes, it can be.
I once took a course on spirit communication that cost over $600… and this wasn’t taught. Maybe because it is simple. But simple doesn’t mean unimportant.

The Heart of It

If you take nothing else from this, take this:
Pay attention to how it feels. That feeling will become familiar to you.
And over time, you won’t need to question it.
You’ll recognize it the same way you recognize a loved one’s voice.
