Sacred Beginnings: Exploring Divination

Opening the door to divine connection

You might be thinking… is there a right way to begin?

When you begin communicating with spirit, I have a few thoughts from my own experiences. It doesn’t mean this is the only way to go about it, just what I found works for me. Take what resonates for you and leave the rest behind.

Sharing With Others

If you are going to share your experiences with others…
consider sharing them with people you know will be encouraging and supportive. Many do not understand this kind of exploration, and unsupportive reactions can affect your confidence, creating doubt. Lack of confidence can make divination more difficult than it needs to be.

Whether it is through direct communication, journaling, channeling, tarot or oracle cards, or pendulum divination, most people naturally want to feel safe while exploring these experiences. In my experience, there really isn’t anything to be afraid of, but many of us were taught that anything unknown is dangerous because people wanted us to be safe.

So, how do you explore the divine and still feel grounded and secure?

You can begin with grounding.
Take three long, deep breaths, spend a few minutes in meditation, or imagine roots growing from your feet deep into the crystalline core of the Earth. Grounding helps focus your energy and intention.

From there, there are some very simple ways to create an environment that feels uplifting, peaceful, and secure.

You can create a sacred space.

It doesn’t need to be large or elaborate. A sacred space is simply an area set apart from everyday life, allowing you to connect more clearly with the divine. It can be large, like a football field, or small, like a windowsill. What makes it special is the energy and intention behind it.

The way I create my own sacred space is often by placing a fresh cloth over a desk that I normally use for everyday work. The cloth becomes a symbolic boundary between everyday energy and my exploration with the divine.

Unless the space is dedicated only to spiritual work, the energy shift may not feel dramatic, but to me it does feel slightly different. When I call in angels to assist me, the energy feels noticeably different because their energy vibrates more quickly. Whether you feel a difference or not, whatever you experience is perfect for you.

What makes a space sacred is less about the objects you use and more about your intention. You are simply saying to the Universe: this place is special for my spiritual practice.

Cleansing Your Sacred Space

Once you have created your sacred space, cleansing it can help transmute existing energies into divine love, raising the vibration of the space.

One simple way to cleanse your sacred space is to fill it with divine light.

You can imagine a stream of divine love and light flowing down from above, filling your entire space. The light can be any color that feels comforting to you. White is always a good choice if you are unsure. Imagine the light uplifting and cleansing the space, carrying away any heaviness into Mother Earth.

You can also use smoke to cleanse your space.

Simply pass incense or smudge through the area while imagining the smoke transmuting all energy it touches into divine love.

At one point, I was ill for a time and had to remain in bed. I began using incense to shift the energy of the room so I could read tarot cards with more clarity. After I felt better, I continued using incense every time I read the cards. It eventually became a personal ritual for me.

Another easy way to cleanse a space is with sound.

Some people ring bells, clap their hands, or gently beat wooden spoons together throughout the space until the sound feels crisp and clear.

Set Your Intention

Once the space feels cleansed, set an intention and create an energetic barrier of protection.

You can use a prayer like this, or words of your own:

Dear Universe,
I intend this session to be guided by truth, clarity, and love. I call upon Archangel Michael to surround me in protective blue light, clearing away all that is not in alignment with divine love.
I ask for the wisdom of my higher self to flow to me with accuracy and ease. I ask that I receive comfort, insight, and direction, free from ego.
All this, or something better.
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
And so it is.

At first, it might take a few minutes to create your sacred space, but after you do it a few times, the process usually becomes much quicker and more natural.

Beginning with Balance

When you are first beginning any type of divination practice, it is easy to become tired because you are using your own energy to help create that connection. When you become tired, your vibration naturally lowers, and that can affect clarity. Because of this, it is often better to keep sessions short in the beginning. Around 15 minutes is a good place to start.

You can think of it this way: everything is energy, and all energy carries a vibration. When you want to communicate with the divine, you want to raise your vibration as much as possible so you can receive the guidance you desire.

In the non-physical realm, there are more beings than just angels and guides, and all carry different energetic signatures. Lower vibrational beings are not dangerous, but if they are able to communicate with you, they often enjoy giving incorrect or confusing information. That is one reason why it helps to begin slowly, while rested and feeling emotionally balanced.

If you are exhausted, unwell, emotionally overwhelmed, or having a particularly difficult day, it may be better to skip the session and return to it when you are feeling stronger and more centered.

What about protection? Do you need it?

Protection is optional. Use it if it feels right for you. Think of it like carrying an umbrella. These practices simply help create a loving, clear container for divine connection.

Something I personally believe is very important to realize is this:
You are in charge of your sessions.
You are sovereign.
Non-physical beings cannot interact with you without your permission.

So if you ever feel that you are no longer communicating with a loving divine being, you can tell it to leave, and it must go. You set the tone for your session.

If you ever feel unsure, you can also ask Archangel Michael to remove any energies that are not aligned with divine love. Simply speak naturally, as though talking with a trusted friend:

Archangel Michael, please remove all energies from my space that are not in alignment with divine love.

Angels are non-denominational and are here for all humanity. It does not matter whether you have ever spoken to Michael before. Protection is one of his specialties, and he is happy to assist anyone who asks.

Sealing Your Aura
After your session, take a moment to protect and center yourself.
Take three slow, deep breaths, feeling calm and grounded.
Visualize a warm, radiant light surrounding your body, forming a shield around your aura.
Silently or aloud, affirm:

“I seal my aura with this protective light. Only positive energy may enter; all negativity is repelled.”
Pause a few seconds to sense the protective light.
Step out of your sacred space knowing you are grounded, protected, and supported by divine love.

Learning to Trust the Process

In hindsight, these suggestions may seem very simple, but when I first began hearing my guides, I had no experience at all. It simply “happened” one day, and I had no idea what I was doing. That is why I share this information now, so your own experience may feel a little smoother and more supported than mine did in the beginning.

Divination can be a beautiful and meaningful experience when you understand a little more about how to approach it.

Over time, these steps tend to become easier and more natural. What may feel like a process at first often becomes something simple and familiar. 💖💖💖

And as you become more comfortable with the process, another natural question often begins to arise:

How do you know who you’re connecting with?
